BioBased Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI-JU)

The BioBased Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI-JU) program is a Joint Undertaking, between the EU and the Bio-Based Industries Consortium. It is operating under the Horizon 2020 program and has a total budget of €3.7 billion for the total duration (2014-2020). Yearly new calls are released under a new Work Program. The aim of the BBI-JU is to reduce the dependency of Europe on fossil-based products, meet the EU climate change goals and lead to greener and more environmentally friendly growth.

Calls are based on the funding types available under the Horizon 2020 program: Research and Innovation Actions, Innovations Action (demonstration or pilot projects) and the Coordination and Support Actions. The program focusses on three pillars:

  1. Feedstock: foster a sustainable biomass supply with increased productivity and building new supply chains
  2. Biorefineries: optimise efficient processing through R&D and demonstrate their efficiency and economic viability at large-scale demo/flagship biorefineries
  3. Markets, products and policies: develop markets for bio-based products and optimise policy frameworks

The last round is now open and will be open until 3 September 2020. From next year on, a new BBI-JU program is expected, under the Horizon Europe program.
