There are 5 grant programmes:

ERC Starting Grant

Subsidy: €1,500,000 – €2,000,000

Total budget: €581,000,000

Funding rate: 100%

Deadlines: New call expected in 2021

Project duration: 5 years

Consortium: Principal Investigator as single applicant who has been awarded his or her first PhD > 2 and ≤ 7 years prior to 1 January 2021 (to be confirmed).

Scope: ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme. Applicant Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.

ERC Consolidator Grant

Subsidy: up to €2,000,000 (+ €1,000,000)

Total budget: €550,000,000

Funding rate: 100%

Deadlines: New deadline expected in 2021

Project duration: 5 years

Consortium: Principal Investigator as single applicant who has been awarded his or her first PhD > 7 and ≤ 12 years.

Scope: ERC Consolidator Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they may still be consolidating their own independent research team or programme. Applicant Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.

ERC Advanced Grant

Subsidy: up to €2,500,000 (+ €1,000,000)

Total budget: €450,000,000

Funding rate: 100%

Deadlines: 26 August 2020

Project duration: 5 years

Consortium: Principal Investigator as single applicant who has track record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years which must be presented in the application.

Scope: Advanced Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are already established research leaders with a recognised track record of research achievements. Applicant Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.

ERC Proof of Concept Grant

Subsidy: €150,000

Total budget: €25,000,000

Funding rate: 100%

Deadlines: 17 September 2020

Project duration: 1,5 years

Consortium: This action is open to Principal Investigators (PI) already benefitting from an ERC frontier research grant (Starting, Consolidator, Advanced and Synergy) of any nationality who intends to conduct their Proof of Concept activity in any EU Member State or Associated Country.

Scope: The objective is to provide funds to enable ERC-funded ideas to be brought to a pre-demonstration stage where potential commercialisation or societal opportunities have been identified.

ERC Synergy Grant

Subsidy: max. €10,000,000 + additional €4,000,000 in specific cases (moving, purchase of major equipment or access to large facilities)

Total budget: €350,000,000 (for 2020)

Funding rate: 100%

Deadlines: New call expected in 2021, deadline expected in Q4 2021

Project duration: 6 years

Consortium: ERC Synergy Grants are intended to enable minimum two to maximum four Principal Investigators. Applications are expected from a group of innovative and active Principal Investigators and must present an early achievement track-record or a 10-year track-record whichever is most appropriate for their career stage (ERC Starting, Consolidator or Advanced Grant profiles)

Scope: Synergy Grant aims to bring together complementary skills, knowledge, and resources in new ways, in order to jointly address ambitious research problems is to address ambitious research questions in any field that can only be answered by the coordinated work of a small group of 2-4 principal investigators.
