Environment Sub-programme (LIFE Programme)

The Environment Sub-programme is part of the LIFE programme by the European Union. It consists of five calls and represents over 75% of the funding of the total programme. Its goals is to stimulate Environmental action.

1. Environment and resource efficiency traditional projects

Subsidy: Varies per project (~€500,000 – 5,000,000)

Funding Rate: up to 55%

Deadline: 14 July 2020 (Concept Note); September 2020 (full proposal; by invitation)

Consortium: Any legal person registered in the European Union: 1) public body; 2) private commercial organisation; 3) private non-commercial organisation (NGOs etc.)

Scope: LIFE Environment and Resource Efficiency aims specifically at contributing to the implementation, updating and development of European Union environmental policy and legislation. Thematic priorities: Water (including the marine environment); Waste; Resource Efficiency (incl. soil and forests, and green and circular economy); Environment and Health (incl. chemicals and noise); Air quality and emissions (incl. urban environment).

 


2. Nature and biodiversity traditional projects

Subsidy: Varies per project (~ €500,000 – 5,000,000)

Funding Rate: up to 60% (or 75% in specific cases)

Deadline: 16 July 2020 (Concept Note); full proposal by invitation

Consortium:  Any legal person registered in the European Union: 1) public body; 2) private commercial organisation; 3) private non-commercial organisation (NGOs etc.)

Scope: LIFE Nature & Biodiversity aims specifically at contributing to the development and implementation of EU policy and legislation in the area of nature and biodiversity. There are two distinct sectors of projects which are intended to complement each other: LIFE Nature projects and LIFE Biodiversity projects. LIFE Nature and LIFE Biodiversity projects should be primarily focused on nature conservation and/or on halting the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of ecosystem services.

 


3. Environmental governance and information traditional projects

Subsidy: Varies per project (~ €500,000 – 5,000,000)

Funding Rate: up to 55%

Deadline: 16 July 2020 (Concept Note); September 2020 (full proposal; by invitation)

Consortium:  Any legal person registered in the European Union: 1) public body; 2) private commercial organisation; 3) private non-commercial organisation (NGOs etc.)

Scope: The programme supports projects in the areas of awareness raising, environmental training and capacity building, legislative compliance and enforcement, knowledge development and public and stakeholder participation. Thematic priorities: for Information, communication and awareness raising campaigns and for Activities in support of effective control process as well as measures to promote compliance.

 


4. Integrated projects under the sub-programme for environment

Subsidy: Varies per project (on average €10,000,000)

Funding Rate: up to 60%

Deadline: 6 October 2020 (Concept Note); indicative 25 March 2021 (full proposal; by invitation)

Consortium:  Any legal person registered in the European Union: 1) public body; 2) private commercial organisation; 3) private non-commercial organisation (NGOs etc.)G

Scope: It is expected that Integrated Projects (IPs) address and resolve environmental/climate problems at a larger scale. Most IPs would therefore implement actions that apply mostly best practices. At the same time, there will probably also be actions of demonstrative or innovative/pilot nature. Specific areas of intervention related to certain strategic plans in nature, air, water, waste.

 


5. Technical assistance projects under the sub-programme for environment

Subsidy: Max. €100,000 per project

Deadline: 16 July 2020 (single stage)

Consortium:  Any legal person registered in the European Union: 1) public body; 2) private commercial organisation; 3) private non-commercial organisation (NGOs etc.)

Scope: Technical Assistance (TA) projects provide, by way of action grants, financial support to help applicants prepare Integrated Projects (IPs). Be aware that the objective of a Technical Assistance project is the submission of a proposal for an Integrated Project. The coordinating beneficiary should submit a full IP proposal before the end of the project.

The LIFE programme is a funding programme from the European Union. It’s goal is to stimulate both environmental and climate action. Since the start in 1992 over 5.400 project received financing from the total budget of €3.4 billion.
