Wet Bevordering Speur- en Ontwikkelingswerk (WBSO) is a tax-deduction that is of major influence to the successful R&D projects of the Dutch life sciences and health sector. It drives innovations and enables companies in taking on riskier R&D-projects.
Is my project eligible for WBSO?
The WBSO is intended for Dutch companies (registered at the Dutch Chamber of Commerce) that carry out research and/or development (R&D) projects. Starters, small independents (ZZP), SMEs and multinationals; all can apply for the WBSO, regardless of business sector.Public knowledge institutions cannot apply for WBSO.
WBSO in 2019
For 2019, the reduction in tax credit is 32% of the first € 350.000 (40% for starters) and 14% of the remaining R&D related costs. Costs and expenditures related to R&D that are eligible for WBSO include: R&D related wage costs, consumable material, research equipment, rent of the research facility and specific software licenses.
What do I need to do to apply for WBSO?
To be eligible for WBSO your company should work on projects focused on the development of technically new (parts of) physical products, physical production processes or software. Your company can also apply for WBSO when focusing on technical-scientific research; if you determined an -yet unexplained- occurrence and would like to find out the reason for this occurrence in a technical way.
